Supporting agriculture one meal at a time

The spaghetti dinner was served by a variety of members from DCHS students to East Butler students. To-go boxes were also available to take meals to farmers in the field.

The David City and East Butler FFA chapters joined forces in arranging the 2017 Feed the Farmer. Feed the Farmer was held on Sat., Nov. 4 at the Butler County Fairgrounds in the Butler County Event Center.

Farmers bare the cold weather, working in any condition to finish harvest. The David City and East Butler chapters came together to praise the determination local farmers have to feed our communities.

Collaboration between the two chapters began in early summer. In previous years, David City FFA has hand delivered meals and handed out candy bars at various cooperatives. This year, the chapters agreed there was a more efficient way to make an impact. The tactic they used this year not only showed appreciation to the farmers but to their families as well.

Feed the Farmer was more widely advertised this year than in previous years. Members of the East Butler FFA chapter worked together to design the flyers, and both chapters worked on placing the flyers around surrounding communities, stretching to as far as Columbus. In addition to the flyers, David City and East Butler collaborated to create a rural radio commercial ad as well as a promotion by The Banner Press.

Both chapters banded together to prepare and serve the meal as well as organize the raffle and welcome guests. Members also had the opportunity to mingle with the farmers and network with local agricultural workers.

Agricultural members, along with local farmers and their families, were welcome to attend the free meal provided by the David City and East Butler chapters. Visitors had a chance to enter prizes into a raffle. Prizes were donated by: Aurora Coop, Frontier Coop, Central Valley Ag, and more.

It is undecided if the David City and East Butler chapters will continue this strategy for Feed the Farmer in future years.
