David City High School Principal Cortney Couch was named the Head Football Coach for the upcoming 2017 football season on Mon., Apr. 24.

Couch was previously an English teacher at DCHS. At that time, he was also the head football coach from 2005 to 2011. Before deciding to step down from coaching to become an administrator, Couch had a record of 34-31 and won four district championships.

The coaching assistants for this upcoming football season include Travis Worm, Cole Carraher, and Tyler Brester.

“When I was a player, he taught us to only worry about the things we can control.  If you put all your determination and focus into what you have to do, things will take care of themselves,” Worm said. “After our coaches meeting, this was a point of focus that will continue to be a mindset for the athletes.”

Over the summer, the coaches will be able to see who the leaders of the team will be during the season. Those who are the leaders are those who make themselves better as well as their teammates. To help train in the off-season, they will have the weight room open for any athlete to come in and lift. These workout sessions will help the athletes’ individual skills as well as team skills. If they have a camp this summer it will be toward the end of the summer.

“Positive interactions with players, parents, students, and fans. Being a principal is a wonderful and important job, but it’s not like I have a daily opportunity to spend quality time with a football team and several assistant coaches,” Couch said. “There is nothing in the principal job description that matches that. It has been the thing that I’ve missed most since I’ve stopped coaching, and it is the thing I look forward to the most upon returning.”
