Senior Konner M. and junior Alesha R. placed seventh and twelfth at the district cross country meet held at Elks Golf Course in Hastings on Oct. 16, qualifying them both for the state competition.

Going into Districts, head coach Bob Unger said he knew a couple runners had a chance to get to State if they prepared hard and had the mindset of making it. Konner M. and Alesha R. consistently placed at meets throughout the season, continuing to improve their times each meet.

Individually, they both ran their best times of the season at Districts. Konner M. ran a personal best 17:57, and Alesha R. broke the school record for the second time this season with a time of 22:50.

“Somewhere along my race, some girl right behind me had a teammate on the sideline that was cheering her on and told her that she was currently holding 15th place,” Alesha R. said. “Obviously, that meant I was 14th. From then on, I focused on what place I was in, and I ended up finishing in 12th place.”

The boys ended up placing sixth as a team, but the girls were unable to place as a team.

The NSAA State Cross Country Meet will be held at the Kearney Country Club on Oct. 24. The Class C girls will run at 2 p.m., and the Class C boys will run at 3 p.m.

“From what I’ve heard, the course is pretty hilly, so I’m guessing it’s going to be an ‘uphill battle’ this next week for practice,” Alesha R. said.
