Qualifying 10 wrestlers for State, the David City High School wrestling team captured its third straight District Championship on Feb. 14.

District champions included freshman Melvin H., junior Wyatt P., and senior Michael V. Joining the champions at the state tournament will be sophomore Ryan W., juniors Lester P., Trent D., Dustin P., and Mack F., and seniors Tony M. and David T.

“I feel pretty good about the 10 that we qualified. I really think that if all of our guys wrestle up to their expectations, I don’t see why any one of them can’t medal,” head coach Tahner Thiem said. “Our goal from the beginning of the year was to win a State Championship, individual and duals, and I still don’t see a reason why we can’t get that done.”

In addition to the success of the wrestlers, Thiem was named District Coach of the Year.

The State Championship will be held Thursday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 21 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. David City will compete in the 4:30 p.m. session on Thursday Feb. 19 which will consist of the first round and quarterfinals. The Scouts will wrestle again in the first and second round consolation matches at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Competition will continue with semifinals and third round consolation matches on Friday at 5 p.m. Consolation semifinals and third and fifth places matches will take place Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The event will conclude with finals beginning at 3 p.m Saturday.
