Meet the janitors: Behind the scenes, behind the clean

Janitor Don McDonald sweeps the commons area floors. McDonald is the newest member of the janitorial staff this school year.

Joan Prescott- Can be seen in the Activities Center or in the arts and band room between 2 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

Q: Where were you born and raised?

A: Right here in David City. I went to all 12 years of school here.

Q: Tell me about your family.

A: I have three children. My oldest son is Ben. He is 26 and an Army Veteran. He and his wife, Amy, live in Denver, CO. They have identical twin daughters that are a year old. Next is Alex. He is 25 and currently stationed at the Kentucky base for the Navy. Last is my 21-year-old daughter Keri. She is not married but has two kids named Addin and Jenna.

Q: You’re almost always seen with a pair of headphones in your ears. What kind of music can we find you listening to?

A: Country. My favorite songs are “Girl in a Country Song” and “Wagon Wheel.” I also love anything by Brad Paisley or Toby Keith.


Pat Kozisek- Can be seen throughout the school and outside working on maintenance. Pat is also is in charge of the heating and cooling system. He works from 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. during the school week and an hour each day on the weekends to make sure everything is in working condition.

Q: Tell my about your family.

A:  My parents are still alive and are still farming. I also have two brothers. My wife, Shannon, and I live here in David City. We have two kids. Adam is 29 and lives in Oregon. Emily is 17 and attends school in Nebraska City at the Center for Education of Blind. I have two dogs that are also like my kids.

Q: What’s your favorite part on the job?

A: I like the maintenance part and watching the kids. I’ve known most of them since they were little, and I’ve seen them all grow up and go through high school.

Q: Do you have any other jobs?

A: I help out at my parents’ farm when I can.


Don McDonald- Can be seen on the third floor of the high school from 2 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. He also cleans the weightroom, district offices, and preschool.

Q: Where where you born and raised?

A: I was born in David City and went to high school here. I graduated in 1977.

Q: Tell me about your family.

A:  My dad was a street commissioner here in town for years and worked for the state of Nebraska. My mom was a school teacher in Bellwood for 33 years. I have a daughter named Miranda who is 36. She is a beautician in Lincoln.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?

A: I am kind of a perfectionist, so I like knowing I have done a good job and have kept the halls and everything clean.


Rod Hoeft- Can be seen on the bottom floor making his rounds from the middle school locker rooms, the commons area, and the classrooms. He works from 7:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on school days and works at sporting events.

Q: Tell me about your family.

A: My wife’s name is Denise. We have two boys and one girl. Our oldest son is Aaron. He is 36. Then, it is Derek who is 30. Last is our daughter Ashley who is 25.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?

A:Interacting with the kids and being able to communicate with all the teachers. I also enjoy doing all the work.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I like to go hunting, especially during deer season, and fishing and camping during the summer. I also like spending time with my four grandchildren: Alison, Brandon, Taven, and Mason.
