The David City High School Speech team brought home the District Championship title on Mon., Mar. 12,  after competing at Raymond Central High School.

“The best thing about Speech is that you meet so many new people, and I am so thankful for every memory I have made during the Speech seasons,” senior Bethany Tebbe stated.

At District competition, each school takes two people for each event, and schools compete to get the most people to State. The Scout Speech team is bringing 13 students to State, along with seven of the eight event champions. Each event and placing from Districts is listed below:

Serious: Jackson Hardin 1st, Brooke Bell 2nd; Duet: Ashley Roemmich and Sarah Wolfenden 1st, Carter Ossian and Josh Escamilla 2nd; Persuasive: Macy Svoboda 1st, Laurel Ockander 2nd; Entertainment: Will Heller 1st, Ebani Filbert 5th; OID: Brooke Bell, Ashley Roemmich, Sarah Wolfenden, Bethany Tebbe, and Josh Escamilla 6th; Poetry: Jackson Hardin 1st; Extemp: Carter Ossian 1st, Laurel Ockander 5th; Informative: Macy Svoboda 1st, Bethany Tebbe 3rd; Humorous: Will Heller 1st, Maya Couch 3rd.

Districts inevitably is the best of times (for those who qualify) and the worst of times (for those who do not qualify), so districts have positives and negatives,” Speech Coach Jarod Ockander stated. “Overall, we put ourselves in a position where we can take home the State Championship, so I’m overall pleased with getting 13 to State in the toughest district in the state.”

The DCHS Speech team won Districts with 424 points, over 100 points more than the second place team, Malcolm. The DCHS Speech team will compete at State on Thurs., Mar. 22.
